Portland Tarot Study Group

On March 15th, we will be meeting at the Theosophical Society (2377 NW Kearney St
Portland, OR 97210) to hear a talk called “The Tarot and the Ancient Wisdom” presented by Steven Marshall. The building is open at 2:30 pm (PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE), and the talk will begin at 3:00 pm. Parking is on the street (therefore limited!) so please arrive early, especially if you want to look through their library.

The following is a note about the talk and the presenter from the Theosophical Society newsletter:

“The ancient wisdom, like an invisible, underground stream, has bubbled forth to the surface in many vehicles and guises throughout all history and across all boundaries of culture and geography. One such vehicle in which the ancient wisdom has been revealed is the picture cards known as the “Tarot”. Another name for these cards is the arcana, meaning “secrets”, as they were intended to be conveyors of the Secret Doctrine to those who were initiated to see it. In this presentation of slides and lecture on the historical development of the esoteric Tarot, it is hoped that a glimpse of the Secret Doctrine of these picture arcana may be revealed.

Steven Marshall, an ordained priest of the Ecclesia Gnostica and rector of the Queen of Heaven Gnostic Church, has been a member of the Theosophical Society since 2001 and a student of H. P, Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine since childhood. He has studied and practiced various forms of divination for over 35 years, particularly Tarot, Astrology, and the I Ching. He studied Tarot and Kaballah through the lessons of the Builders of the Adytum (BOTA) for over thirteen years. He attended courses in alchemy, astrology and Qabala in 1975 and 1976 at the Paracelsus Research Society under the direction of Frater Albertus. A baccalaureate degree in Psychology and a background in Jungian studies has given him a distinctly psychological approach to the occult sciences, He has been published in the Golden Dawn Journal and has lectured for the Portland Gnostic Society since 1982. In 1984, after twelve years of study and writing, he collaborated with an artist in the design, production and publication of a deck of the Major Arcana, the Tarot of lnitiation”
